Gruber on the Windows 8 Preview Video

by Ash White / 06.01.11

John Gruber just summed up my exact thoughts about today's announcement by Microsoft previewing the UI changes being made in Windows 8. The last paragraph is particularly good: Apple’s radical notion is that touchscreen personal computers should make severely different tradeoffs than traditional computers — and that you can’t design one system that does it all.

Learn iPhone Programming on a Budget

by Ash White / 08.21.09

The world of iPhone and OS X development is not an easy one to break into. There is a steep learning curve involved even for those who have experience developing on other platforms, not to mention the time it takes for a relatively green developer to learn the ropes. For this reason (among others), iPhone developers are able to charge great rates when they are commissioned to create apps.

The Hit List - Sync Your Tasks Between Multiple Macs

by Ash White / 04.09.09

I've recently been playing around with The Hit List, the task management program from Potion Factory, considering it as a replacement for OmniFocus. I've been using OmniFocus for a while now and while it does its job well, in my opinion the interface leaves a little bit to be desired.

Use MobileMe to SSH Into Your Remote Mac

by Ash White / 03.22.09

It's no secret to Mac users that if you own more than one machine, Apple's MobileMe service is a great way to keep your data synced between all of your machines. And while it's true that there are plenty of methods of doing everything that MobileMe offers for the much lower price of free, I have yet to come across a one-app solution.

Replacing the Hard Drive in Your MacBook Pro

by Ash White / 11.21.08

Today I installed a brand new hard drive in my 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro 15". The drive that was shipped with the computer, a Hitachi 120GB 5400 RPM drive, just wasn't cutting it anymore. I purchased a new Seagate 320GB 7200 RPM SATA drive from NewEgg and replaced it in about 45 minutes.

Color-Coded Source View in Safari

by Ash White / 10.11.08

One of my only gripes with Safari 3 is the lack of color-coded HTML source in the "View Source" window that is presented in the View menu or when right-clicking on a page. While it's true that you can view color-coded source code in the Web Inspector, you have to first enable the Developer menu in the Advanced tab of the Safari preferences.
